What Are Signs of Anxiety in a Child?

The signs of anxiety in children may not look the same for every child, but there are common symptoms that many may experience.

“We certainly see kids at times behaving in a very, what they call 'oppositional way’ when they’re anxious about something,” explains Dr. Jill Ehrenreich-May on The Pandemic Parenting Podcast. “It can confuse parents because suddenly someone is just refusing to go somewhere, or do something or follow a direction, and it’s actually because they’re feeling anxious.”

Dr. Ehrenreich-May and Dr. Donna Pincus describe common symptoms of anxiety in children, which may include:

  1. Frequent complaints

  2. Difficulty sleeping

  3. Headaches

  4. Tantrums

  5. Seeking frequent reassurance about worries

  6. Stomachaches

  7. Irritability

  8. Hopelessness
